Spice Mi-Tab: To Buy or not to Buy

0
0

There have been loads of low cost  tablet launched over last couple of months .Technopundits were the first to update about the launch of Spice tablet and also published specs of the Spice Mi-Tab. The article aims to help readers in making a decision whether to buy this particular tablet or skip it.

Touch Screen  and Panel: Spice M- Tablet has a capacitative touch screen ,  .It has a 7 inch TFT-LCD WVGA screen, no Amoled screen and no Pixel Q (Read more of this at Technopundit @ What is Pixel Q). The touch screen performance is at par with Reliance , Mampmyindia Carpad and other tablets in similar .

There are three touch-sensitive Android buttons below the screen and a 2Mexa Pixel at rear. The build quality of panel is not great and looks mediocre .

Operating System :  Spice M-Tablet comes with  preloaded with android 2.3 . Its good but not the best . For resolution of tablets android 3.0 is the best , An OS update from Spice  seems impossible. The main reason is its 800Mhz processor  which will not support android 3.0 ,so it is out of question here.

Lot of applications do not perform best with android 2.3 , as for tablet high resolution ,you’ll need android 3.0. .

Processor /Memory/Hardware : Spice M Tablet  comes with Qualcomm 800 Mhz processor with 155MB RAM. Now just 155MB RAM for a tablet is not at all impressive and if you are planning to run navigation application like that of MapmyIndia or Navteq for mobiles and on background you might have 3G running with Emails , Facebook  ,Skype etc, device would be very slow and sluggish.

Another effect of low memory would come while online streaming .The device behaves erratic while streaming youtube. We played 720 p videos on it and it was fine but forgot playing 1080p video on it.The Adreno graphics process that is part of Qualcomm processor is not the best but definately descent one allowing one to play games like Angry birds nicely in the tablet.

The device comes with 4GB storage built in, expandable via the microSD slot. Next to the micro SD card slot is a full-size SIM card slot. The SIM card slot allows for the device to be used as a phone.

GPS : Spice M-Tablet  has GPS and comes with Google maps , however specs does not mention about AGPS which does not seems to be there. AGPS for 3G is good combination for GPS to work nicely. Also Google maps are free , but not the best . They do not provide accurate data and will rely more on 3G . A pre installed map application could have been amazing . Samsung Galaxy and Dell Streak comes with preinstalled Sygic application . Any such application cost around 2k , so add this to cost of tablet.

Spice Mi-Tablet Camera

The Spice M Tab comes with a secondary VGA camera for video chat or video calling and a primary 2 megapixel camera with digital zoom.

3G features :  Reliance 3G tablet in similar range is locked with its own network, however there is no such issue here. It means you will  be able to use any 3G with other tablet

Applications: The tablet supports Flash video, so you can watch streaming videos from various websites. You can use Facebook, Twitter, Orkut etc. You can download instant messenger apps like Nimbuzz to chat on Google Talk, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo. You can also use SKYPE for VOIP calling. The Adreno 200 graphics processor can run 3D games at good speed. The G-Sensor supports tilt based games. So you can play games like NFS, Ashphalt 3D and other racing or action games. The device supports a wide variety of audio and video formats so you can enjoy music and video. You can also download media player apps from the Android Market if you like.

The Spice Mi-720 comes with the Documents2Go Word/Excel/PPT viewer. If you want to edit , create or modify office files, you can buy the full version of the Documents2Go office app or the QuickOffice ap

Cost : Now the Million Dollar Question : To buy or not : For a person who has worked on high end tablets may not find it to be as smooth , but then at cost of  around Rs12,000 it’s not that bad. If we compare it with Reliance Tablet ,the disadvantage is absence of 3G data plan and applications of Online TV .Also the panel and feel of device is not that good but its a descent tablet otherwise. Now i would really want  Tablets of this quality to be below 10k. I will recommend in that scenario
